Understanding dissolved oxygen concentrations in a discontinuously perennial stream within a managed forest

چکیده

The concentration of oxygen dissolved in water affects aquatic organisms. Unrestrained logging and site preparation can depress (DO) concentrations adjacent streams by elevating temperatures (with removal riparian shade), impounding channels (reduced reaeration rates), introducing fresh, oxygen-depleting slash. One the first paired watershed studies investigating use streamside management zones, Alsea Watershed Study (AWS) coastal Oregon (1958–1973), highlighted potential to DO harvest units. This other spurred development Best Management Practices (BMPs) forest practice rules maintain, among things, favorable streams. A new study watersheds (2006–2015) found little signal effects on concentrations. It did find that a discontinuously perennial stream (where reaches go subsurface during low flows) experience naturally Forest managers avoid exacerbating conditions using simple BMPs, but are predisposed

Modeling stream dissolved organic carbon concentrations during spring flood in the boreal forest: A simple empirical approach for regional predictions

[1] Changes in dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration are clearly seen for streams in which chemistry is measured on a high‐frequency/episode basis, but these high‐ frequency data are not available in long‐term monitoring programs. Here we develop statistical models to predict DOC concentrations during spring flood from easily available geographic information system data and base flow che...

Coupled Cycling of Dissolved Organic Nitrogen and Carbon in a Forest Stream

Dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) is an abundant but poorly understood pool of N in many ecosystems. We assessed DON cycling in a N-limited headwater forest stream via whole-ecosystem additions of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and labile dissolved organic matter (DOM), hydrologic transport and biogeochemical modeling, and laboratory experiments with native sediments. We sampled surface and ...

A stormflow/baseflow comparison of dissolved organic matter concentrations and bioavailability in an Appalachian stream

Patterns of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and nitrogen (DON) delivery were compared between times of stormflow and baseflow in Paine Run, an Appalachian stream draining a 12.4 km2 forested catchment in the Shenandoah National Park (SNP), Virginia. The potential in-stream ecological impact of altered concentrations and/or chemical composition of DOM during storms also was examined, using standa...

Benthic sediment influence on dissolved phosphorus concentrations in a headwater stream

Phosphate interacts with inorganic sediment particles through sorption reactions in streams. Collectively, this phosphorus (P) buffering mechanism can be an important determinant of soluble reactive P (SRP) concentrations. If sorption reactions control SRP concentrations in a stream, then differences in sediment characteristics may cause spatial differences in SRP concentrations. This predictio...
